In a world where disaster recovery often attracts unscrupulous contractors who take advantage of vulnerable homeowners, Ian Perry of Perry Construction Group represents a refreshing alternative. On a recent episode of the Good Neighbor Podcast, Ian shared his journey of establishing a construction company built on honesty, transparency, and local commitment.
Ian's path to becoming a contractor wasn't straightforward but seems almost predestined when he tells it. Starting with childhood LEGO and K'NEX sets, he developed an early passion for building that evolved through high school engineering classes. After serving in the Marine Corps, Ian found himself at a crossroads, unsure of his next steps. It was while working alongside his brother as a handyman in 2015 that he reconnected with his love for construction. From there, his career progression accelerated – from foreman to superintendent overseeing hurricane rebuilds after Hurricanes Michael and Irma, and then to a structural engineering firm where he learned the technical, code-compliant side of construction.
What prompted Ian to launch his own company was seeing the aftermath of Hurricane Milton. Too many locals were falling victim to fly-by-night operators who would collect substantial deposits and disappear. As a resident of Lakewood Park in Fort Pierce, Ian emphasized his commitment to the community: "I'm local, I live here... I'm not running away anywhere." This local connection allows clients to trust that he'll be accountable for his work, something particularly valuable in an industry where reputation matters tremendously.
One of the most interesting insights Ian shared concerns construction pricing. He explained that many contractors use bulk pricing (e.g., $250-350 per square foot), but he prefers providing detailed line-item estimates. While more time-consuming and challenging to create, these transparent breakdowns empower homeowners to make informed decisions about their projects. As Ian put it, "People appreciate it a lot more when they see this individual thing is going to cost me three thousand dollars... Maybe I don't want to do that or maybe I want to do less of it." This approach creates win-win situations where clients can customize projects to their budgets.
The podcast conversation took a personal turn when Ian shared a significant hardship that tested his resilience. Shortly after the birth of his first daughter – which already involved a difficult delivery and a COVID diagnosis – Ian was laid off from his superintendent position. This happened just two months after purchasing a home, creating immense pressure. This challenging period taught him valuable lessons about balancing professional responsibilities with family needs – a balance he continues to navigate as a self-employed father of two young children.
For anyone in the Treasure Coast area needing construction services, Perry Construction Group handles everything from small repairs to complete renovations and additions. Ian can be reached through his Facebook page or website at perryconstructiongroup.com. He emphasized that he's the local Perry Construction Group (tan and white colors), not the similarly named Pennsylvania company.
