The Growing Importance of Accessible Mental Health Services in Our Communities
In a rapidly changing world where mental health concerns continue to rise, virtual counseling services like Starting Pointe Counseling Services are becoming invaluable resources in our communities. Founded by Montigus Jackson, Starting Pointe Counseling Services recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary, marking a decade of providing virtual mental health services to residents across Florida. The journey to this milestone, as Jackson shared on the Good Neighbor Podcast, exemplifies how personal challenges can transform into professional purpose when we're open to new beginnings.
Jackson's path to becoming a mental health counselor wasn't initially obvious, though the signs were there from childhood. As he explained during the interview, he was always a naturally curious child who enjoyed people-watching and questioning why individuals behaved in certain ways. This innate interest in human psychology made him the unofficial "voice of reason" among friends who frequently sought his advice. Yet professionally, Jackson first pursued sports management in college before eventually switching to psychology—a decision that would ultimately shape his career trajectory. After completing his bachelor's degree in psychology and master's in mental health counseling, he found himself working in treatment centers in South Florida, though he admits it wasn't quite the right fit for his skills and interests.
The birth of Starting Pointe Counseling Services came from what initially seemed like adversity. In late 2014, Jackson was unexpectedly let go from his position at a treatment center. Shortly after, he tore his Achilles tendon playing basketball, requiring surgery and forcing him to take time away from work. While these events might have appeared catastrophic at the time, Jackson now views them as the catalyst that gave him space to envision and launch his private practice in January 2015. "I'm actually glad that they got rid of me because it allowed me to do what I really wanted to do," he reflected during the interview. This perspective highlights an important lesson about how setbacks can sometimes redirect us toward our true purpose when we're able to sit with uncertainty and listen to our intuition.
Starting Pointe Counseling Services takes a comprehensive approach to mental health services, working with a diverse clientele including couples, families, and individuals across all demographics. Jackson personally specializes in counseling men, though his practice now includes two additional therapists who bring their own specialties to the table. Their underlying philosophy is captured in their motto: "Everyone has a starting point." This simple yet profound statement acknowledges that regardless of where clients are in their mental health journey or who they've seen previously, beginning therapy represents a fresh start. Jackson emphasizes that successful counseling requires active participation from both the therapist and client. "We're not just going to fix the issue," he explained, addressing a common misconception about therapy. "It takes both parties involved to get to the other side of things."
As mental health awareness continues to grow and stigma gradually diminishes, services like Starting Pointe Counseling Services play a crucial role in making support accessible. Their virtual format removes geographical barriers for Florida residents, while their diverse team helps ensure clients can find a therapist who understands their specific needs and experiences. Jackson's story reminds us that sometimes our greatest professional contributions arise from our personal challenges—and that everyone, indeed, has a starting point from which growth and healing can begin.
